First southner killed in civil War
April 28 1861. Washington DC. Two weeks after Sumter. Unoin troops went to arrest my maternal Great great grandfather Cornelius Boyd for being a southern sympthizer. At 2am they surrounded his house and knocked on his door. When he answered it and saw who it was he shut the door and was shot through the door and killed. The troops were arrested and tried in DC court. Sgt John Murphy was convicted of man slaughted. October 1 1861 Lincoln pardon him. I wonder if Sgt. Murphy was regular army and knew cornelius from being stationed in DC. The date being so close to the beginning of the war was Cornelius the first southner killed by Union troops?
