Josiah Thomas a freed slave serves his country at his own risk
My great great grandfather Josiah Thomas, a free man wanted to serve his country. So he had to turn his papers in to show proof that he was free. He enlisted because he loved his country. Whites opposed enlistment of Blacks in war, 186,000 fought in War, one third died or were missing. Josiah Thomas attained rank of First Sergeant within 3 years of service, trampled by his regiment during the retreat at Petersburg, Virginia. He was mustered out and left the war, lived for 23 years. Great Great Grandmother Jane Thomas received a war pension for herself of $8 month, and $2 a month for each child under 16 years old, a total of $18. Jane Thomas, born a slave, died at age of 107, reunited with her long lost sister Ellen days before her death. We have not been able to find whereabouts.
