Sperm Donor Child, Are You My Father?
I have an interesting story to share but it is unfinished and I’m hoping Finding Your Roots can help! I recently found out at age 25 that my father is not my biological father. I am the child of a sperm donor. The doctor told my parent’s to never tell me and kept all his donor kids’ files in his personal file cabinet. I have done some research and found this is a huge undiscovered peoplegroup in the US that will never know their ancestry or medical history because of the anononymity and lack of legislation regulating the practice. I do however know that my four years younger sister is my full blooded sister from the same donor. Unfortunately she does not yet know and my parents are hesitant to tell her until she graduates college in Spring 2013. I was a big fan of your show before I understood why! You introduced me to the 23andme service and I have considered using it to better understand my risk factors and where I come from on the globe. The reason this came out is I was asking my father about how I was conceived knowing they went through infertility. My wife and I are having our first baby and I became insatiably curious. The worst part is that my parents spoke with the doctors son after telling me and it turns out the doctor is very old now and destroyed all the donor files four years ago. The only thing I know is he graduated as an M.D. in 1990 from University of Kansas and worked at the KUMC medical center during his time there. I would love if Finding Your Roots would do a special on sperm donor cbildren and pick a few people to find their roots and make the issue more public. I would be ecstatic to volunteer to be part of that study! Please let me know what you think of the pitch and my story! My self-identity depends on it, literally!
