FINDING MY MATERNAL GRANDFATHERS FAMILY ORIGINS
I was born in BROOKLYN, N.Y., 10/19/1936, ; MY MOTHER SALLY (SLAWA) (MARUCH) SHABSIS, Was Born in White Russia, as was her father Michel Smule Maruch, I never had any interest in knowing about the family origins, other then what I’ve stated.
By the time I realized that my grandfathers family was most probably Sephardic, my mother had advanced Altzheimer disease; her sisters and brother were dead, and my cousins knew very little.
In fact my oldest cousin Thelma does not believe the family name was Maruch, since they changed it to Mark, when the arrived in the USA.
I have my mother passport, a copy of my grandfathers passport and my Uncle Chaim Maruch’s business card, all with the name Maruch,
I also have a towel embroidered by someone in my grandfathers family, since the language of Polish and Russian uses the Cerilic(sp?) Alphabet, this is written in the in what I believe is the Roman alphabe, so that is puzzle 1.
Puzzle 2, when I was in Isreal I went to the Diaspora Museum, I told them my grandfathers name, and they told me they knew the name Baruch, but not Maruch.
This is what is embroidered on the towel, B.R. in small letters , Below that is the word MILEH (which I belive was meant to be MELICH or dairy) since Jews did not mix Dairy and Meat!
in the right hand corner is written in Capital letters, “MOROKO”!
I have a copy of both my GRANDPARENTS AND MY MOTHERS SHIPS MANEFEATO’S
My grqandparents arrived in the USA in 1925 and my mother arrive in 1929, she was the youngest of 6 children, and the only one to complete 2 years of Gynasium!
She lived with her brother and his family for those 4 years, she was 17 1/2 years old when she arrived.
