My new hobby!
We all know we are a nation of immigrants. My mother & grandmother told me I was descended from Welsh & Irish hillbillies. I started working on my genealogy several months ago. I researched through many generations in what is now West Virginia. It appears most of my family traces to not only Welsh, Irish, but also Scottish, English, with a smatter of German. My biggest surprise is how far back on my mother’s side, I had to go to find an immigrant. My 2nd biggest surprise was what long generations my father’s line had. I enjoy the mysteries. My largest mystery is my mother’s father. I was told by my mother, that my grandmother was pregnant by a man named Fitzpatrick, when she married Paul Weaver. Another interesting mystery has to do with my paternal great grandmother. Her name was Sarah Bowles & she immigrated to the US in 1845. Her Father was Thomas Bowles & her mother was Maria (maiden name not known). With them on ship, was Sarah Beauchamp & she lived with the family for 2 census records. Was she an aunt, sister or other family to Thomas & Maria? I grew up in a lower middle class family without many advantages. imagine my surprise when I learned I could claim DAR membership on both paternal & maternal lines. I find this a most intriguing hobby for my retirement. When I’m finished with my research, I want to present my family tree information to my daughter & my grandchildren.
