These times are the most precious memories to me. Neither grandparent spoke english. I like to think it was their own form of protest for what had been taken from them. Upon arriving, we always spoke with our great-grandparents first. No matter what type of activity our cousins were up to.
All the Aunts, Uncles and our many cousins also made the trek “down home.” We slept on pallets on the floor, went swimming in the ice cold creeks and jumped onto a swayback horse and paraded around the yard.
I miss my grandparents every day. They didn’t speak english but they always knew they were the magnet that drew us all home. They were very much loved.
I know that I am a mixed Native/ Cherokee /Creek and on my mother’s side I believe us to be English/Irish. It’s a fantastic mix!
