Where did this name come from?
My mother’s maiden name was Hayes. Her father, my grandfather, Daniel John Hayes, was a longshoreman and tavelled the world. That is about all I know and as far back as I can go and I want to know more about my mother’s lineage. There’s the story of two brothers, my uncles, who served in World War II. One received a purple heart. While serving in North African, one hard the other’s voice and they discovered that they both were fighting against Rommel’s battalion in the desert. Another uncle, Sonny, was a boxer and hung out with some of the Philly fighters back in the ’30s and ’40s. My mother graduated from Germantown High School in 1948 and received the Medal of Honor for ourtstanding academic achievement. There were five uncles and two aunts in all who led fairly distinguised lives. But we don’t know where the name Hayes came from. Some of us guessed that it might have come from Rutherford B. Hayes, an abolishonist. There’s a whisper that one of our grandfathers was a slave captured under the Fugitive Slave Act and that Rutherford B. Hayes defended him and won his freedom. Anyway, I’d like to get an answer to this question before I die so I am asking for your help.
