My great-great grandfather, Jozef Lewandowski, came through Ellis Island in 1904. He was from Poland, in the part ruled by Russia. He refused to serve in the Tsar army, declaring he was Polish (which was a crime at that time). The government wanted him executed, but he escaped to Philadelphia with his brother. He married in 1909 to another Polish immigrant and had 7 kids with her. My great-grandmother was their first child, Mary. Two died in infancy. He lost his wife and his last child during the flu epidemic in 1920. He remarried, but was widowed once again in the 50′s. He died in February 1963 at the age of 81.
