Karen Glenn is a registered nurse and has been working in the school system in Robertson County, Tennessee. She has two children, Erinn and Logan, and is married to Mark Glenn, her second husband. The biggest challenges on the frontier have been psychological, she says. Hard work is no problem, but she has struggled with loneliness. She misses regular contact with her family and old friends who know her well. On a material level, she says, she thought she was going to miss toilet paper and NEWSWEEK magazine, but what she's really missed is Diet Dr. Pepper. "I don't even drink a lot of soda at home," she says, "but I guess it was sort of my special treat in the 21st century. It was my little reward after working hard. I'd go and sit on my front porch and drink a Diet Dr. Pepper. That special little treat is what I've missed most. Isn't that funny?"
