Great Performances - Copland's America
Great Performances Home Introduction Meet the Artists A Look at the Work Behind the Scenes Resources
The 100th birthday of Aaron Copland -- "the dean of American composers" -- is celebrated in a performance-documentary honoring the music that for many has come to embody the American spirit. Tracing the development of Copland's wide-ranging work for the concert hall, theater, and film, the program also features his landmark compositions for the ballets of Agnes de Mille and Martha Graham. In performance sequences with baritone Thomas Hampson and clarinetist Richard Stoltzman, Jonathan Sheffer conducts the Eos Orchestra in new renditions of such Copland classics as "Appalachian Spring" and "Fanfare for the Common Man." To create a sense of Copland's life and times, documentary footage of 20th-century America is interspersed with insights from contemporary composers such as John Corigliano, Elliot Goldenthal, David Del Tredici, and Copland biographer Howard Pollack.

A short biography of famed composer Aaron Copland is featured in Meet the Artists. In A Look at the Work, writer John Ardoin provides some background on several of the Copland works performed by the Eos Orchestra in the evening's program. Composer John Corigliano's thoughts on Copland's style of composition and impact on classical music can be found in Behind the Scenes.
