Kurosawa's YOJIMBO and the filming of A FISTFUL OF DOLLARS.

A lot of Italian movie people accused [director Sergio] Leone of copying every shot [from YOJIMBO] and running a Moviola ... but he didn't if you watched him, they're not shot at all alike. There are ... certain visuals that are similar, but it wasn't intended to, you know, Kurosawa loved to follow his protagonist all the time. He loved to have the camera behind him instead of. ... It was something I love to do a lot of times ... but Leone stayed more in front and ... he fell in love with the zooms and a lot of things like that, which he used rather effectively, and they later became abused by almost everybody on the planet. But ... they were totally different and everybody approached it -- nobody referred to YO[JIMBO] ... once we started shooting, nobody ever referred to YOJIMBO again. We just went ahead and made this little Western [A FISTFUL OF DOLLARS].

They mentioned YOJIMBO and I ... loved the film, and they loved the film, so it all worked together. So, two people from two different continents were ... in sync on their admiration ... for ... Kurosawa's picture. ... Leone didn't feel himself bound to any mores of the American Western, though he grew up watching John Ford and all these wonderful directors. He ... he was still more influenced, in this case, by Kurosawa's approach to it, so it worked out very well.
