Kurosawa's use of light and shadow.
He saw things in light and shadow. Other directors would shoot color as is. Of course, when shooting in black and white, he'd pay extraordinary attention to the differences in dark and light. In DRUNKEN ANGEL, when [Toshiro] Mifune is walking ... just out of frame, he'd create shadows of different shapes. There were always shadows on Mifune or the wall to give the feeling of heat. Not a lot of directors would do that. Wiping sweat with a handkerchief would be the normal direction. But that doesn't give you that sweltering feeling.
