The Sweet Sound of "West Side Story" from Joshua Bell: West Side Story Suite from Central Park

The purpose of this lesson is for students to explore the relationship between language and music. During this lesson, students will research Leonard Bernstein and the making of "West Side Story," listen to Joshua Bell perform selections from "West Side Story Suite," and compare the "West Side Story" play to a current opera about two young people living in the Balkans.


LEARNING OBJECTIVES:


1. Students will explore Leonard Bernstein's contributions to the world of American music.

2. Students will examine the relationship between language and music.

3. Students will gain an understanding of how music can be used to express emotions.
