Come Together: The Music That Made John Lennon from John Lennon's Jukebox

One of the great rock 'n' roll legends, John Lennon, icon and iconoclast, has captivated fans across generations with music that defies easy categorization. The discovery of Lennon's old Discomatic from the 1960s, containing his collection of 45s, prompted the making of JOHN LENNON'S JUKEBOX, which offers an in-depth exploration of the musical influences that shaped his songwriting. Through activities in this lesson, students will examine and form opinions about the notion of artistic influence, research and present biographical information, read and share information about the artists who inspired Lennon's music, and create projects tracing the evolution of popular musical genres.

Time Allotment:
Five (5) class periods

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

Students will be able to:

1. Tap prior knowledge and build background through music.

2. Form and express personal opinions through analysis of quotations.

3. Research and present information.

4. Use appropriate MLA citation style for researched material.

5. Engage in critical thinking before, during, and after viewing the program.

6. Take notes while viewing a program.

7. Synthesize information to create a project.

8. Work in groups for critical evaluation.

Copy of GREAT PERFORMANCES' JOHN LENNON'S JUKEBOX
Beatles CDs or THE BEATLES 1 (a compilation of their greatest hits)
Quotations sheet
Genre Chart
