The Story of "The Nutcracker"
Grades: 6-8

Since its premiere at the Mariinsky Theatre on December 17, 1892, "The Nutcracker" has captured the hearts and minds of people all over the world and has been performed more than any other ballet. In this lesson, students will explore "The Nutcracker" ballet, tell the story of "The Nutcracker" to a younger child, and write a letter to the person who first reviewed "The Nutcracker" in 1892.


LEARNING OBJECTIVES:


1. Students will identify and discuss the elements of a ballet.

2. Students will explain how a piece of music can be used to express a mood.

3. Students will critique "The Nutcracker."

4. Students will identify and dramatize the essence of "The Nutcracker."
