Andrea Bocelli Live in Central Park
About the Concert

“Star singer Andrea Bocelli dazzled thousands with his signature brand of pop and opera on a cold, wet night in New York City’s Central Park, which will be etched in his memory as an important career milestone.”

So it was reported by Reuters news agency a day after the historic event which saw the tenor following in the distinguished footsteps of opera superstars Luciano Pavarotti and Placido Domingo, both of whom have given memorable Central Park performances.

Andrea Bocelli Live in Central Park airs on THIRTEEN’s Great Performances, Friday December 2 at 9 p.m. ET (check local listings). Accompanied by the New York Philharmonic, under the direction of music director Alan Gilbert, the spectacular event was Bocelli’s special gift to New York City. The program is the New York-based offering of the multi-city PBS Arts Fall Festival, which includes four Great Performances productions. Award-winning journalist Paula Zahn is the evening’s host.

Watch a preview:

Widely regarded as the most popular Italian tenor in the world with more than 70 million albums sold, Bocelli was joined that rainy, windswept evening by pop stars Céline Dion, Tony Bennett, Chris Botti and David Foster, and from the classical world, bass baritone Bryn Terfel, sopranos Ana María Martínez and Pretty Yende, and violinist Nicola Benedetti, along with the Westminster Symphonic Choir, under the direction of Joe Miller. Bocelli presented a varied repertoire that includes well known arias, fan favorites, and some new surprises.

Since Great Performances introduced American television audiences to Bocelli with 1997’s Romanza concert, Bocelli has been featured in a notable series of Great Performances specials, including Sacred Arias, Amore, Vivere, My Christmas and American Dream, his spectacular “Statue of Liberty” concert from New Jersey’s Liberty State Park.

The night began promisingly as the setting sun cast a golden glow on the New York skyline, but as Maestro Gilbert struck up the portentous strains of Verdi’s La Forza del Destino overture, a light but steady rain fell over the crowd of some tens of thousands of New Yorkers, and those who had come much farther, to see him. Though umbrellas were raised, and a chilly wind began to blow, fans were swept up in the beauty of the music and the presence of their idol. “In spite of the rain and cold, you are heroes,” Bocelli assured the adoring crowd.

The first act of stirring operatic selections including Verdi and Puccini favorites gave way to more popular fare in the second including duets with Celine Dion and Tony Bennett.

Bocelli’s performance was the latest in a rich tradition of memorable free concerts in Central Park which, over the years, has included such notable performers as Barbra Streisand, Simon and Garfunkel, Diana Ross, Garth Brooks, Bob Marley and the Wailers, and Bon Jovi.

Before the concert, Bocelli nostalgically reflected, “I cannot help but smile when thinking about the upcoming concert in Central Park. It was my father’s dream, and my father was right, because my artistic path would have been entirely different without the strong and sincere embrace of this extraordinary city where everything is possible, even when it seems impossible. My father will not be there, but I can count on his blessing and his kind and gentle smile to give me courage. My mother, sitting in the front row, will feel my father, too, and they will be together again just like when I was a little boy performing on the fireplace steps. Perhaps they had secretly dreamed that I might have the opportunity to perform in New York City, and maybe right here in Central Park.”

Concerto: One Night In Central Park will also be released on CD , DVD and CD+DVD by Sugar/Decca on November 14th.

  • Terie

Cant wait to see it on DVD…really all the performers but especially proud that my son was there as a member of the Westminster Symphonic Choir. What a privilege it must have been to be around such talented artists.

  • Donna Butler

I can’t believe I missed it on TV, Will you have a repeat showing? Please do or place the full episode online.
With the changes in Facebook it has totally changed the viewing ability to the Media Pages on Facebook, they get lost in the Main news Feed, I wish the media would request they change back the viewing options seperating media from the mingling of friends, I loved it the old version on facebook, it was like reading the newspaper, you could get your news media seperate & it was easier to catch up; maybe you (media) should suggest the change back or some kind of seperation. I just happen to catch this in the sideline margin, I miss it the way it was, the contact connections are lost they way it is now.
I will look for the repeat showing, Please & Thank you!… Love PBS!!

  • Ricardo

I AM ENJOYING THIS PROGRAM OF GREAT VOCAL MUSIC. I WAS INTRODUCED TO OPERA AND CLASSICAL MUSIC BY AN OLDER, DEAR FRIEND,HE HAD RECORDINGS AND MAGAZINES WHICH I ENJOYED, AND WHICH HE INTERPRETED FOR ME.

MY HINDSIGHT TELLS ME HE WAS GAY, BUT THAT DID NOT MAKE ANY DIFFERENCE TO ME, OR TO MY PARENTS. HE WAS ALSO AN ARTIST, AND A PERSON WHO OPENED A WORLD OF TO ME, A CHILD.
    T. C_SCOTT OFFUTT WAS A FRIEND, AND A PERSON WHO SHARED HIS WORLD WITH ME. WE WENT ON BICYCLE /PAINTING/ PICNIC TRIPS AROUND BALTIMORE COUNTY., EXPLORED THE STREAMS, PARKS AND FARM LAND.

THIS MUSIC BRINGS IT. BACK TO ME. ANOTHER PERSON WHO WAS SPECIAL WAS MY DENTIST, AUGUST MACHEN,. AND MY DEAR FRIEND’S MOTHER, BOTH OF WHOM INVITED ME TO THE OPERA.

THIS MUSIC, OPERA, AND PBS ARE ALL VERY IMPORTANT TO ME.

  • Janet

Andrea Bocelli is THE BEST…. BRAVO !!!!!!! BRAVO !!!!!!!! BRAVO !!!!!!!!

    I love, ” TIME TO SAY GOOD-BY ” and ” THE PRAYER “.

  • Susan

I was very fortunate to have heard him two summers ago in Venice, Italy! We didn’t have tickets to get in, but it was in San Marcos Piazza, with black dividers up which blocked your view, but you could hear him perfectly! It was a serendipitous occasion!

  • John

As always Bocelli was magnificent.I heard him in his debut performance with PBS and he just keeps getting better. I have always loved Pavarotti’s Nessun Dorma, but Andrea’s rendition was maybe more brilliant, especially his finish. I was in tears. thank you New York and a special thanks to PBS. Let’s keep it fully funded!!!

  • Cathy

For those who missed it on the 2nd; it is on again tonight 12/4.

  • Elizabeth R. Morgan

This concert is so rich in talent and Boccelli’s voice is so amazing, I cried of pure gratitude for having had the opportunity to watch this even at home. I am so thankful that my son Ethan recorded this PBS special for me; never want to delete it! I would have gladly sat on the grass in the rain to witness it in person too!

  • Jenn

It was so moving on TV I can’t imagine what a thrill it would have been to see Andrea and friends live in Central Park. I can see why the rain did not deter any of the spectators to leave.

  • Gina De Vittorio

Will the Central Park Concert be rebroadcasted on PBS? I saw his concert in Washington DC and it was awsome! Mille Grazie!

  • Mary Catalano Studer

I just loved the way you looked last night your hair and dress was just beautiful! Is there anyway to send me a photo of yourself. Can you tell me the designer name of the dress too please? The concert with Andre Bocelli in Central Park aired last night on PBS

I was so fortunate to be in the audience of the Verizon Center in Washington, D.C on Dec. 2, 2011!
This was for me the concert of a lifetime to hear Bocelli in person. I will never forget his voice. Hearing him in person was unbelievable. he brought tears to my eyes.

He truly has a gift ! All I could say was “OMG”!!

  • Liz

I fell asleep 20 minutes into the show and woke up just before Tony Bennett. Now I know I have to get the DVD. He is so good and so good looking! I usually work nights but this was my night off and whipped. His music was like a lullabye to me. Caught his Christmas concert last night.

  • Marjorie

Good heavens!! You left out the name of the beautiful soprano who sang “Time To Say Goodbye” with Andrea. That song isn’t nearly as special without that soprano voice. She wore that outstanding green gown. Her name, please?!

  • david ernst

    Hi Marjorie,

Thanks for pointing out that omission on the website! The soprano who sang with Andrea is Ana Maria Martinez. We’ll update it immediately.

    Thanks,
    GP Team

  • Ken

My sister missed the concert and she loves Bocelli. When I watched the performance, I believe there was a donation level that would also include receiving a DVD of the performance. Is that still a possibility now?

  • david ernst

    Hi Ken,

Yes, you can find the DVD or the CD on http://www.shoppbs.org.

    Thank you for your question.

  • Cordelia Bonaccorso

Im gonna go with The Hurt Locker. (^_^)

  • Mary

I would love to have the DVD and will go to the PBS to get it. I did watched the presentation, they offered tickets for the concerts with donations, is this available, or is it only for members.

  • Gloria

So lucky tonight, May 19th, 2012, to be watching what must be a repeat of the 2011 show . Every song was sheer delight. The voices are superb and it is a privilege to watch and hear. I have been an opera lover from early childhood and now we are able to “go to the Me” via cable TV in theaters throughout the country. Television is one of the greatest inventions for all the people.

  • Viki Bello

Guys, we couldn’t find this concert on DVD on your website. Please provide a direct link right here, below the article, or better yet sell it on Amazon next to the VHS they have listed. Please, it’s 2012 already, who has VCRs today? ;-)

  • Bob Bello

Hi, we are looking to buy on DVD “American Dream: Andrea Bocelli’s Statue of Liberty Concert” (2001), but all we can find is a VHS copy on Amazon (Asin B000QB4PZO). Please list it here on sell it on Amazon, because this is a legendary concert with tribute to the Italian immigrants and we want to have it in our family. Thank you!

  • david ernst

    Hi Bob and Viki,

You are correct, and unfortunately due to its date of manufacture, there is no DVD version of Andrea Bocelli’s Statue of Liberty Concert. We have other Andrea Bocelli programs available on DVD and hope you stay tuned to for more GREAT PERFORMANCES.
