From Vienna: The New Year’s Celebration 2013
About the Concert

Stage and screen legend Julie Andrews returns for the fourth time to host the festive annual New Year’s celebration with the Vienna Philharmonic, under the direction of Franz Welser-Möst from Vienna’s Musikverein. This is Welser-Möst’s second time at the podium of this much cherished event; the last was 2011.

From Vienna: The New Year’s Celebration 2013, featuring the infectious melodies of the Strauss Family and contemporaries, will air live on Great Performances, Tuesday, January 1 at 2:30 p.m. ET on PBS (check local listings) with an encore performance that evening at 8 p.m.

Watch a preview:

Great Performances is a production of THIRTEEN for WNET, one of America’s most prolific and respected public media providers. For 50 years, THIRTEEN has been making the most of the rich resources and passionate people of New York and the world, reaching millions of people with on-air and online programming that celebrates arts and culture, offers insightful commentary on the news of the day, explores the worlds of science and nature, and invites students of all ages to have fun while learning.

The venerable concert is the largest worldwide event in classical music reaching over a billion people annually through radio and television in 72 countries. The Vienna Philharmonic’s traditional New Year’s program has showcased Viennese musical culture at the highest level, and since the first television broadcast in 1959, sent the world a New Year’s greeting in the spirit of hope, friendship and peace. (The telecast has been a public television tradition on PBS since 1985.)

The opportunity of Andrews celebrating New Years in Vienna has become a most pleasurable tradition. “I’m so delighted to return to Vienna at this magical time of year. This enchanting city never ceases to take my breath away with its fairytale beauty and grace and history. The Strauss waltzes provide a most delectable soundtrack to the visual delights that surround me there.”

She has been a frequent and luminous presence on Great Performances, starting with “An Evening with Alan Jay Lerner” (1989); “Julie Andrews in Concert” (1990); “Some Enchanted Evening: Celebrating Oscar Hammerstein II” (1995); “Back on Broadway” which spotlighted her return to the Great White Way in “Victor/Victoria” (1995); “Hey, Mr. Producer! The Musical World of Cameron Mackintosh” (1998); “My Favorite Broadway: The Leading Ladies” (1999); its follow-up “My Favorite Broadway: The Love Songs” (2001); and the restoration of the classic 1957 “Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella” (2004). She also hosted the Emmy Award-winning series Broadway: The American Musical in 2004. Andrews will soon be featured in the celebration of Great Performances’ 40th anniversary, currently planned to air in spring/summer 2013.

Great Performances is funded by the Irene Diamond Fund, the Anna-Maria and Stephen Kellen Arts Fund, Vivian Milstein, Vera von Kuffner Eberstadt, The Starr Foundation, The Agnes Varis Trust, and the Philip and Janice Levin Foundation, public television viewers, and PBS.  Exclusive corporate support for the concert is provided by Rolex.

From Vienna: The New Year’s Celebration 2013 is produced by Heidelinde Rudy, and directed by Karina Fibich, with John Walker as producer/writer. For Great Performances, John Walker and Richard R. Schilling are producers; Bill O’Donnell is series producer; David Horn is executive producer.

It would be so lovely if your DVD of the New Year’s Eve program included Julie Andrews as she hosts the program.

  • Jeff Browne

Thanks again, PBS, for all you do and bring to our world. Can’t wait to view this concert. What a great way to ring in 2013.

  • Doreen Godwin

This is the best of the year for me spending the Christmas with family and friends and now the chance to be able to sit quietly and listen to a wonderful concert…..Thank you PBS for completing my year.

  • Gretl

Looking forward to the concert and this is one of the many reasons why I support PBS.
It brings back memories while growing up in Austria and a few tears as well !

  • Erika Helena

I have listened to this concert from Vienna for over 25 years. I have most of them taped on VHS , but the tapes are getting bad. My tapes are all with Walter Croncite hosting, he was fabulous. Coming from Vienna this music is in my blood and I always shed a few tears longing for a time long past. Without this program it would not be a New Year. Thank you PBS for bringing us this marvelous show.

  • fluffypunkin

I look forward to this concert every year. I adore seeing my Julie Andrews, hosting the best concert of the year in an incredibly beautiful city.

Thank you, PBS, for providing the opportunity for us to watch the Vienna New Year’s Concert – at the Golden Hall of the Wiener Musikverein, home of the Vienna Philharmonic – Julie Andrews hosting. My music students will be watching. I look forward to this concert every year. It makes New Year’s complete. God bless and Happy New Year!

Can anyone advise if I can watch the 2013 concert on line today? I live on a sailboat and don’t get TV service…Thx!

  • Sal

Thanks PBS for showing this wonderful event.

  • Jolanta

I have been watching those amazing concerts for years and with my luck my TV just broke. Does anybody have any idea if this year’s concert can be seen online? Many thanks and a Happy New Year to all classical music lovers!

  • Dirk Baeuerle

For those who do not have a TV nor can afford one, it would be nice in this age to be able to view this concert over the internet on your site!!! Please make that possible so that more viewers can view great programming by showing them over the internet instead of just local TV channels.

  • John Goodrich

Is there a way to see the Marvin Hamlisch tribute concert which was o PBS last night, December 31st? We missed the broadcast and thought maybe I could find on You Tube, but I did not see it? Any advice would be most appreciated.

  • Cynthia

My dad taped this concert every year beginning in 1985 when PBS began broadcasting it to the US. After he passed away in December of 2004 I found in his VHS collection a performance which included not only the Philharmonic, but the Vienna Ballet (possibly the Vienna Boys Choir) and the wonderful Lipizzan horses of the Spanish Riding School. What I remember of the performance was that it included a pas de deux which cut between the Vienna Ballet performers and two stallions performing at the Spanish Riding School. In addition there was also a significant amount of time focused on the stallions performing under saddle in various combinations of horse/rider, in-hand on the long line and airs above the ground. This was the most fantastic performance I have ever seen combining Vienna’s wonderful classical music, ballet and horses in their historical settings!! Unfortunately, the tape was lost and I have been trying to find out which year’s performance I’m remembering as I’d like to purchase the DVD. The 2002 concert featured the stallions but only in the eight horse/rider grouping and a few airs above the ground…no pas de deux with the ballet. Does anyone know which year’s performance I’m remembering; where I can find a comprehensive episode description that not only includes what music was featured but also mentions what other group(s) are included in the performance; or if there is a place where I can view or download the past year’s episodes online? Thank you and Happy New Year.

  • Sabrina Messenger

I enjoy watching the Vienna Philharmonic New Year’s program on PBS each year. Lord willing, someday I’ll be able to go to Vienna to see the concert live!

    To Cynthia’s comment above:

Today the Vienna Philharmonic’s website is a reduced version to deal with the demand for information about this year’s New Year concert, but it should return to the normal version in a couple of days.

When that happens, you may find that there is a section dedicated to displaying all the program listings of the regular concert season as well as the New Year Concerts (some major orchestras have it,, I’m not sure about the VPO).

The other thing that might work is to query the VPO’s management about the New Year concert you want information on–there may even be an email address for the VPO’s archivists.

  • BJ Cork

I love the Vienna concerts and look forward to them each year. But I DETEST Julie Andrews as the host. I was not familiar with her but think she is terrible. I realize Walter Cronkite has died, but can’t they find someone almost as good?

  • John Smoody

In previous year’s pages for this wonderful annual event PBS had a link to view the titles of the works programmed. I cannot find one for the 2013 performance. Assistance please with much appreciation! Happy and continued creative success in 2013 for PBS!

  • Yiu Chan

How to deal with the problem of Maria ??

Well, the Vienna Philhamonic Orchestra (may be Andre Rieu too), can easily solve the problem of Maria, with a mix of “Wine, Woman and Song” and “My Favourite Things”.

Get Chrstopher Plumber and some of the von Trapp family members too next year. They can dance to the Waltz as well as Landler.

Needless to say, I am a big fan of the Strauss family as well as Julie Andrews.

  • Alastair and Helga Stone

Was our first concert 1968 or 1969? We have loved them all….and this year was no exception!

  • Donna

Thank you, PBS for another lovely New Years concert. Julie Andrews is a wonderful addition to your programing… she is such a sweet person. You are most welcome to host the program next year, Julie!

  • Sharon

Is there a list of the venues where the dancers performed and Julie Andrews gave her commentary? We didn’t catch all of the names.

  • K Schwomeyer

That concert was AMAZING!!! You present so many wonderful concerts! But I have to say I enjoyed this one so much! Thank you. I loved the concert director. It was so obvious that his actions were all made through his heart and love – for the music and the musicians. I also think that Julie Andrews did a nice job introducing the event and music.

  • Sam Barry

The phone number to order DVD/CD went by to quickly. Please .give me the number.

    Sam

  • Joe Milroy

Will this program be rerun anytime after Jan 1, 2013?

  • Sylvia Meeks

I am so disappointed to find that the concert will not be shown on my local PBS channel until 2:30 A.M. Jan. 2.
For many years it has been the highlight of my New Year’s Day, and I do not understand why it was moved to this awful time – ending at 4:00 A.M. Sad……

  • Bernie Littig

I, too, would like to obtain the ordering information for the DVD and CD of this progam. What a performance! Please reply with the needed information. Thank you,
    Bernie

  • M. Newman

Thank you for showing this wonderful concert! Just the right way to start the new year and the perfect end to the holiday season. Never miss it.

  • Marika Ujvari

Will there be a DVD of this program, and how soon???

  • Burgy Bose

I would like the 1 800 # so I can order the DVD of the New Years Eve Concert from Vienna

  • A. Clough

A relative from the Island of Jamaica, West Indies, called to tell me the Great Performances Vienna Concert 2013 was on. Only had chance to see a few pieces. Could not find the way to order one or two DVDs but left a message for Member Services to call me on the 2nd. I have signed up to receive program information. Had the pleasure of seeing Andre Rieu and the Johann Strauss Orchestra 3 times when he played at Grand Prairie through PBS auspices. He has not been back to Texas in years. Very sad. Thank you.

  • Paula Carruth

I too would like the phone number to order the DVD of the New Year’s Concert. My 86 year old mother-in-law watched it and loved it, but too missed the number. Please, it would bless her if I could get the it ordered for her.

  • Lucía

I would like to have information on the program. Is there a CD of the concert for sale?

  • Susan Briggs

I absolutely loved the Vienna, The New Years Concert 2013. The # went too fast about ordering and I so want a video. Can you tell me where I can get one? Thank you so much!

  • Aaron

The DVD number, as displayed during the credits, is 1-800-336-1917. There is also a 2CD set.

  • Kay Diers

To Cynthia’s comment: To what year the Concert included The Lippizaner Horses and Vienna Boys Choir – I saw the program in 1991, if I remember correctly. I saw the concert on Jan. 1st and I went to a performance of the Lippizaner Horses in rural Indiana in April. I kept remarking how extraordinary it was to see the horses four months apart. I hope this helps.

  • Giovanni

The Vienna 2013 New Year’s Concert was totally aweome! It would be so cool to see it in person, but watching it on TV is the next best thing.

  • martha

Did you see the movie, The Sound of Music ? Julie is in that, which features many such classical music.

  • Vash

I stumbled upon this concert tonight. I had not watched the previous ones. It was totally awesome. I am going to order the DVD.

  • elisabeth

how can i order the dvd?

  • Doris Reichert

How can I purchase the DVD of the New Years Celebration 2013?

  • Deb

This year’s concert was one of the best ever. I do miss Walter Cronkite, but loved Julie Andrews as host and hope she will return for many years to come. Watching this wonderful performance is such a delightful way to ring in the New Year – especially after watching hours of football! Thank you for bringing such talented musicians and such beautiful scenery into our homes. Happy New Year!

  • Corinne

Really enjoyed this year’s concert and the music selection from the other composers. Appreciated that Welser-Most chose music that related to Johann Strauss’ style. I feel this was the best concert I’ve heard in a few years. We watch this concert as part of our Father’s birthday celebration. Appreciate PBS’ continued support of this program. Happy New Year!

  • Franz V. Huber

    Dear Mr. Thiel,
Unfortunatly I missed this concert. Please let me know where I can obtain a DVD of this concert. Thank you!

  • Kim

I believe that was the 2002 concert. Here is the description I have:

Once again, GREAT PERFORMANCES returns to the legendary Austrian music capital to continue its New Year’s Day concert broadcasts from Vienna’s majestic Musikverein hall. With veteran “From Vienna” host Walter Cronkite presiding over the festivities, the celebration features the world-renowned Seiji Ozawa as guest conductor, leading the Vienna Philharmonic in a buoyant selection of Strauss family waltzes. Complementing the telecast’s ballroom repertoire will be performances by the Vienna State Opera Ballet, including perennial favorite “On the Beautiful Blue Danube” with soloist dancer Vladimir Malakhov. In a special addition to this year’s telecast, the historic Viennese Spanish Riding School leads Austria’s famed Lipizzaner horses in several equestrian ballets.

    Happy New Year!

  • Melva Riedl

I would like to purchase the Vienna New Year’s Concert 2013 DVD. Can you give me information as to where to order it?

  • Mark

All versions of the 2013 Vienna Concert are available unedited, sorry PBS, at Amazon.com. That includes CD, DVD regular and Blu-ray. I have been collecting these for many decades and was amazed at PBS for not replaying this at more reasonable times and dates.

  • Marshall

I was deeply disappointed by this concert. I have dvd’s of New Year’s performances conducted by Carlos Kleiber, and they were all music. No dance, no tourist views of Vienna, no extraneous hosts/hostesse. Just music.

  • Erin Hamett

Nice post. I was watching continuously this blog and I’m impressed! Extremely useful info especially the last part I care for such info much. I was looking for this particular information for a long time. Thank you and best of luck.
