I disagree most strongly with both elliot and bill.
The staging was a disaster from all points of view
including some well known critics. I would liken the view that "the rebirth" aspect is askew in this instance and I would like to know why everything has to be "brought into the 21st century". Heck why not re-paint
the mona lisa as larry the cable guy? give me a break! There is nothing wrong with tradition in art. If you must, write an opera that appeals to the masses( oh thats right, I forgot, Tommy, Hair, Godspell, ect.) and leave the standards alone! I will agree that the singing and music were sublime,but my wife (36) myself (33) and my son (8 yes he loves opera so I consider us younger
as we have been going to the met for years) would have enjoyed it much more
as the period piece it was and is, meant to be.

I agree with Elliott--this is a tremendous production--Opera is all about the music. The music, signing and staging were wonderful.

Angela I disagree. The staging for this was perfect, the minimalist approach really worked. The use of the screen was excellent. This was a very beautiful production. I think you should learn to respect the diversity and rebirth that the 21st century is bringing to opera. Old traditional productions will not draw the younger crowd who must support this art when the older generation dies off.

Poor Pushkin and Tchaikovsky!
It is a very bad staging, costumes!
If somebody like to do opera "Eugene Onegin", hi or she needs the very first to read the book of
A.S. Pushkin (you can find a good translation, as did I).Is not too bad also to find an exemple of staging this opera in Russia but not contemporary but in the past and to start "dansing" from that point. I can understand artists from Russia, They were afraid to tell their comments about staging and costumes.I don't even think, that MET didn't have enough maney to make a very good prodaction;
You need to be more careful and to do better your homework!
Hope, that next time "Eugen Onegin" vill be staged "a little bit ' different and closer to the opera and novel.
