GP at the Met: Il Trovatore
About the Opera

Verdi’s Il Trovatore, starring four of the world’s most celebrated interpreters of the leading roles and conducted by Marco Armiliato, will air on THIRTEEN’s Great Performances at the Met Sunday, August 28 at 12 p.m. ET on PBS (check local listings). In New York, THIRTEEN will premiere the production on Thursday, August 25 at 8 p.m.

Watch a preview:

The telecast was originally seen live in movie theaters on April 30, 2011 as part of the groundbreaking series, The Met: Live in HD, which transmits live performances to more than 1500 movie theaters and performing arts centers in 46 countries around the world.

Great Performances at the Met is a presentation of THIRTEEN for WNET, one of America’s most prolific and respected public media providers. For more than 50 years, WNET has been producing and broadcasting national and local arts programming to the New York community.

The cast earned excellent reviews for their performances after the premiere of David McVicar’s critically acclaimed production in 2009: as the heroic troubadour of the title, Marcelo Álvarez is “exciting, conveying Manrico’s urgency and desperation” (The Wall Street Journal); in the role of Leonora, Sondra Radvanovsky is “remarkable…a spirited, feisty heroine” (Variety); Dolora Zajick is “a force of nature” (The New York Times) as Azucena, the gypsy with a dark secret; and Dmitri Hvorostovsky’s “vivid presence and rich baritone emphasize Count di Luna’s swings between hell-bent vengeance and romantic obsession” (Variety).

McVicar’s production of Il Trovatore, notoriously difficult to stage due to its complex plot, also won critical acclaim for its straightforward emotional power. The New York Times applauded McVicar’s “clear-headed, psychologically insightful and fluid staging.” This staging of Il Trovatore, which is visually inspired by Francisco Goya’s series of prints entitled “The Disasters of War,” features sets by Charles Edwards, costumes by Brigitte Reiffenstuel, lighting by Jennifer Tipton, and choreography by Leah Hausman.

Renée Fleming, who stars in Strauss’s Capriccio also in August on Great Performances at the Met, is the host for Il Trovatore and will interview the opera’s stars during the intermission. Barbara Willis Sweete directs the transmission and Jay David Saks is music producer.

Great Performances is funded by the National Endowment for the Arts, the Philip and Janice Levin Foundation, and Joseph A. Wilson. Corporate support for Great Performances at the Met is provided by Toll Brothers, America’s luxury home builder®.

For the Met, Mia Bongiovanni and Elena Park are Supervising Producers, and Louisa Briccetti and Victoria Warivonchik are Producers. Peter Gelb is Executive Producer. For Great Performances, Bill O’Donnell is Series Producer; David Horn is Executive Producer.

  7. Kisa Sorokin says:

So I am not the only one who is sad about your poor advertising of you OPERA ON HD. Come on what is your problem? There is so much junk, so when we find something wonderful we have to beg to hear/see it??????PLEASE HELP!!!!!

  8. Marc-André Roberge says:

The transmission of Verdi’s “Il trovatore” on 28 August (channel 57, Québec City, through Videotron) was totally botched as a result of video problems, only to be replaced by Lucia di Lammermoor with Natalie Dessay when it became clear that the problems could not be solved. Would you be kind enough to tell us when the expected programme will be rebroadcast?

  9. Suzanne Faye says:

I, too, am bereft and disappointed. Comcast was having problems, so we all missed out on Trovatore. When will it be rescheduled? You do realize that, in Philly, you are the only PBS station that covers the Met broadcast. I think you owe it to your adherents to tell us when we can expect a rebroadcast. If we are alienated, you lose your base.

  10. Pat Erlanger says:

Comcast broadcast Il Trovatore on Sun 8/28 @ 1pm on PBS. I was thrilled. The production is so wonderful and the cast were all masters. Something so fabulous o TV. However my DVR also experienced tech. problems and erased when I went to play it back. Please rebroadcast if at all possible.

  11. Connie Dinnsen says:

My husband and I greatly enjoyed Il Trovatore on PBS. Please continue to present more and more including Madame Butterfly by Rossini.

  12. kris williamson says:

is there a way to purchase these broadcasts?

  13. martin says:

PBS-You ask us to support you but when we need you to help you don’t – we need to know when the Great performances/ MET Opera are going to be on. Not just be looking every day – to watch such a long programme needs a bit of planning. Please, please, post a real schedule for several months in advance or at least have an automated mailer.. please do something to share your secrets – when is the next opera to be aired?

    Thank you.

  14. Adam in WI says:

I’m with Kris. I would love to purchase a copy of this performance. Can that be done? Thank you!

  15. Marc-André Roberge says:

So far four viewers have taken the time to write to complain about the transmission problems and the cancellation of the broadcast of “Il trovatore”. So far PBS has been offered any form of reply. There is no evidence that the comments posted on this Web site are monitored and taken into account. I am sure that many people would appreciate knowing what the network’s intentions are about the botched broadcast of Verdi’s opera. Thanks in advance.

Dear Marc-André and other GMET fans,

Apologies for the delayed response. Unfortunately, some viewers experienced video problems due to the effects of Hurricane Irene. It is up to local stations whether or not to re-broadcast a program according to their schedule. Please contact your local station to see if they have any planned repeats. Thank you for your comments.
