The singers, particularly Ms. Racette, were wonderful--really right on vocally and dramatically ---and they deserve even more credit for achieving such fine performances despite the distracting, intrusive and at times downright comical use of puppets and puppeteers. The dance sequence with the Madame Butterfly puppet seemed more suited to "Bride of Chucky" than to Puccini. The weird-looking artificial "Trouble" destroyed the poignancy of the mother/son scenes --especially when the puppeteers' hands were visible moving its body parts. The presence of the puppeteers looming over Butterfly and Trouble during the most intimate scenes made them seem like voyeurs. With singers of this caliber the Met does not need to resort to cheap gimmicks to get attention.

The musical performances were stunning.
Please, please get the WGCU Great Performances logo off the bottom of the screen. It is difficult to read the subtitles & so distracting.
Thank you.

Just saw Madame Butterfly on my DVR. I was so impressed with the puppetry - obviously an art form in itself. Loved (as well as surprised at) the involvement of the puppeteers in the emotion. A perfect support for this rendition in the beautiful Japanese form.

I loved Patricia Racette's performance in Madame Butterfly. When will it be repeated? Is it available on DVD?

I just saw the perfomance of Madama Butterfly on the television. What a beautiful performance! Mr/Ms. Giordanni and Racette were superb and so touched my heart. I have seen several productions of Madama Butterfly but, this production was the height of creative artistry - not only the Puccini's timeless score and the beautiful voices, acting and costumes, -- but also the moving sets and excellently executed puppetry in the tradition of Japanese theatre. Thank you so much. I wish I could have been at the Met in person!

Patricia Racette is amazing. I had not seen or heard her before, and was so taken by her beautiful voice and emotional involvement in this demanding role. I thoroughly enjoyed the broadcast. One problem: the Channel 13 monthly schedule listed "Thais" for last night, not" Butterfly."

All right, I'm not an opera fan, nor attendee, but my mother has been for all her 70+ years. It was a great performance and she enjoyed the broadcast & cried the entire time. But the puppet playing the Asian child in the performace, was stupid and insulting. It would have been more appropriate to have a real child playing the part instead of puppet masters, shame on you.
