Watch the Full Program

Based on the Academy Award-winning 1994 Italian film that became a surprise hit with audiences around the world, and also on the 1985 novel Ardiente Paciencia by Antonio Skármeta, Il Postino, an opera by Daniel Catán, tells the story of a shy young postman in a tiny Italian fishing village, who discovers the courage to pursue his dreams through his daily deliveries to his only customer, the esteemed Chilean poet Pablo Neruda, played by Domingo.

I loved the film; I loved the opera! My dream would come true if a DVD of Il Postino were available. Please let me know if and when this occurs.

  • Linden Rogers

Yes, please let me know when the DVD-ray is published. What an amazing production. Thanks PBS.

I live in Austria and I enjoyed watching it on my computer! I saw the production in Los Angeles and loved it. So emotional and beautifully done!
It traveled to Vienna and Paris with a different cast for Mario Ruoppolo. It was Israel Lozano in Vienna and Charles Castronovo and Daniel Montenegro shared the part in Paris.

I hope there will be a DVD which we can watch in Europe as well!

Thank you for making this available online as well.

Ditto all. THANK YOU!!! Please let us know about DVD availability. Also, would you please try to broadcast the MET’s current opera Satyagraha with Richard Crofts et al and encourage DVD availability? (There was a live HD broadcast and filmed repeat in cinemas recently.) This was one of the most phenominal opera productions I’ve ever seen (despite its length–after all, they do Wagner)!

Thank you so much for presenting this very profound opera Il Postino by Daniel Catan on the PBS Great Performances. It is wonderful to see an opera about the power of poetry. The entire cast is wonderful.

I saw the opera in LA and it was very moving to see how it was put together in such a beautiful way for televised edition. I really do hope that the DVD will come out soon. I feel that this is one of the most important operas of our times.

    Dear Theresa,

Please visit our Season Preview page here, which includes a rundown of our Great Performances at The Met – Season 6 which will include this years “Live in HD” production of Philip Glass’ Satyagraha.

    Thanks for your comment.

Thanks so much, David! I found it and will now do a research project to see if either my local PBS station (KET) or the national feed from Washington, which I subscribe to, will be carrying it. Hopefully the latter, if not the former.

I am trying to access the video above, but cannot. A notification comes up on my screen saying “we are experiencing technical difficulties that are preventing us from playing the video…” I would very much love to see the opera above. I am located in Chile. Perhaps you wouldn’t mind reposting, or putting the video as an embedded file-sent via email. Many thanks-H
