About the Musical Theater Broadcast

Broadway’s smash hit musical Memphis, winner of four Tony Awards® including Best Musical, Best Score, Best Book and Best Orchestrations, comes to THIRTEEN’s Great Performances Friday, February 24 at 9 p.m. on PBS (check local listings). Featuring the original Broadway cast, including Tony nominees Chad Kimball and Montego Glover, as well as Derrick Baskin, J. Bernard Calloway, James Monroe Iglehart, Michael McGrath and Cass Morgan. Memphis is the historic first Best Musical Tony Award winner to air on U.S. national television with its original principals while simultaneously continuing a successful Broadway run and national tour.

Watch a preview:

Charles Isherwood of The New York Times observed, “[Composer] David Bryan evokes the powerhouse funk of James Brown, the hot guitar riffs of Chuck Berry, the smooth harmonies of the Temptations, the silken, bouncy pop of the great girl groups of the period.” The New York Post raved “Of such thrills, Broadway is made.” The Associated Press called Memphis “The very essence of what a Broadway musical should be.”

Memphis takes place in the smoky halls and underground clubs of the segregated 50’s, where a young white DJ named Huey Calhoun (Kimball) falls in love with everything he shouldn’t: rock and roll and an electrifying black singer Felicia Farrell (Glover). Memphis is an original story about the cultural revolution that erupted when his vision met her voice, and the music changed forever.

Filled with high-octane dancing, songs that perfectly capture the era, and an absorbing tale of fame and forbidden love, the show offers soaring emotion and roof-raising rock ‘n’ roll.

The show’s Tony®-winning original score features music by Bon Jovi’s founding member and keyboardist David Bryan and lyrics by Bryan and Joe DiPietro (I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change), who also pens the musical’s book. . The show is based on a concept by the late George W. George (producer of the Tony nominated Bedroom Farce and the film My Dinner With Andre), with direction by Tony nominee Christopher Ashley (Xanadu) and choreography by Sergio Trujillo, (Jersey Boys, Next to Normal).

The critically acclaimed production of Memphis won a total of four 2010 Tony Awards including Best Musical, Best Score (David Bryan and Joe DiPietro), Best Book (Joe DiPietro), and Best Orchestrations (David Bryan and Daryl Waters). Memphis is currently in its 3rd smash year on Broadway, delighting audiences nightly at the Shubert Theatre (225 West 44th Street).

Memphis recently launched a U.S. national tour in Memphis, TN, which opened to critical acclaim in October 2011 at the historic Orpheum Theatre.

Memphis will be released on Blu-ray™, DVD and digital download on January 24th by Shout! Factory, in association with Broadway Worldwide.

Any possibility of this being shown in the Philadelphia area? Also, could we have more
MET HD performances when they become available for the masses on Public Television?
Fine arts programs can be popular, witness DOWNTON ABBEY.
    Thank you.

Will this be aired in the Atlanta area? I have searched and the episodes of GP to be aired over the next 2 weeks are the Jackie Evancho and the Phantom eposodes.

    • Karl says:

Same here. Atlanta also aired the Adele episode of Artists Den a week later at 11:45.

    • david ernst says:

      Dear Dwayne,

As of right now, it appears that the Atlanta affiliate GPB, has chosen not to air Memphis this Friday at 9 p.m. We’ll do our best to let you know if they decide to air it at a later date.

      Thank you for your question.

  6. Deb Ham says:

Unable to find it on our local listing either Dayton Ohio. I saw it on Broadway and I would love to view the productionin my living room.

    • david ernst says:

      Hi Deb,

It appears that the Dayton affiliate is not carrying our broadcast of Memphis tonight. Any chance that you get the Cincinnati PBS affiliate CET? They are airing it at its nationally scheduled time, tonight at 9PM/8c.

      Thanks for your comment.

  7. Jim Donovan says:

  8. David H Taylor says:

Just finished watching the show. Wow! I laughed, I cried, I sang in my heart with joy. This is why we tell stories of our struggles to find what it means to be a people joined together in our hearts.

  9. Tim Jackson says:

Just watched the musical on PBS tonight. It was just like being back at the Shubert Theater in NYC. It was great seeing Memphis on Broadway and this is as close as you can come to being there – that is, unless you catch the touring company.

  10. tom collins says:

Why do I live in Central Texas? I told all of my friends and family to be sure to tune in tonight. Memphis went off after an hour or so and then the station flashed a “technical difficulties” sign for an excruciatingly long time. This was accompanied by scenes from Belton. I watch PBS so that I can get scenes from other, far more interesting places. Then they showed a few minutes from a concert from the Crane School of Music which they then interrupted with BBC World News. KNCT has 4 channels and this is the one that failed. Is there any chance that this show will be broadcast on another day? Thanks in advance!

  11. katie says:

Did anyone catch the number at the end!? If so please comment…I really wanted to order it but silly me didn’t write down the number :-(

  12. CDan says:

  14. Jim M. says:

Wow, woke up around 2:30am due to a sick child’s coughing. I was so astonished to find this wonderful performance on PBS at that time. I was able to see the final 120 minutes of the remarkable production. Now, I can’t wait for it to come on again so my wife can see it! This might be the closest I can get to taking her to Broadway!

  15. Peter says:

when is this on again?????? I loved this.

  16. marsha says:

I loved ths production! The casting was perfect!!!!! I held on to each note and emotion! WOW! I called every friend and told them to watch this amazing production. Please, I would like to own a copy. I didn’ get the number at the end. I would appreciate a response. Thanks so much.

  17. Holly says:

Saw this last night on PBS in Central Florida. Awesome!!! WOuld love to see it live now. though….the person portraying Huey Calhoun can not beat Kimball.

    • C. S. Hamilton says:

      Hi Holly

I have to say having seen both Kimball and Adam Pascal live in the role that both are fantastical! Each made the role their very own. While Chad was more on the goofy end, Adam played slightly more reserved with a more ecklectic quality. Each have a wonderful chemistry with Montego Glover. Both have killer vocals but I must admit that Adam’s take on “Memphis is Me” is more to my liking; he captured the edge of the song stronger. I will say this, go see it live BEFORE OCTOBER (2012) in NYC. Adam Pascal and Montego Glover are only contracted thru Oct 2012.

      Good Luck!

    • DANNY H. OLSEN says:

  22. Don Morrison says:

Just a joy and unbelievable experience to see on PBS. Once again, PBS brings the best (on the open airwaves)! Thanks PBS for bringing rememberances back to my life via this show. Coming from Gainesville, FL where music was prevalent in life, this was simply a reminder of what music does in life and how it affected one’s life. Thanks again.

Saw this 2X on KET (Kentucky Educational TV) out of Lexington and the state-wide network of remote stations. I have no idea how these actors/singers/dancers have the stamina to do this show….absolutely fantastical!

  25. Erica Stern says:

Any chance that this will be rerun soon. I caught most of it but really wanted to see the rest!

    • C. S. Hamilton says:

      Hi Erica

Just an FYI. I’m not sure if you are aware but Memphis: Live in HD (aka Memphis: The Original Broadway Production) is now available on dvd & blu-ray (release date 1/24/2012). This is the same production shown on Great Performances.

Amazon had the cheapest offer at $14.99 & $19.99, respectively.

We saw the televised “Memphis” n our PBS station in San Diego. It was terrible. The sound was so bad that you couldn’t understand the dialogue or hear the songs clearly. i can’t understand how you could repeat it when the sound was so bad. Didn’t anyone listen to it? A real disappointment. . Betty woolf

  28. Anthony Green says:

I remember this and personally loved it :). Yeh the sounds wasn’t too good but heh!
