I’ve never heard Domingo sing The Duke — interesting that he’s singing the baritone role here! The only other time he did that (in recent years, anyway), was in Simon Boccanegra. I look forward to seeing this performance!!
I can’t wait unitl tomorrow night. The thought of hearing one of the greatest tenors of the past40 years singing a baritone role opposite the most exciting new young Italian tenor to come alongsince Carreras (whose days of singing well were all too brief) is VERY special!
I’ll be up and watching, even though it will start at 2 am here !! This is too exciting to miss.
This was a great production. The location is magnificent and the performances were impressive. I have followed Domingo since his New York City Opera Days. It was interesting to see him return to his Baritone beginnings. In his younger years he was great as the Duke, now Rigoletto fits him both vocally and physically. I have always admired his musical intelligence and his acting ability (not always a given with Opera Singers who often are singers more than actors). He proved them both again in this performance. Vittorio Grigolo was great as the Duke and Julia Novikova was a vulnerable, innocent Gilda, although sometimes vocally overshadowed by the strong male voices of Domingo and Grigolo. I hope PBS will rebroadcast this production sometimes.
Absolutely wonderful presentation of Rigoletto.
Will it be repeated in near future?
