Directed by Marco Bellocchio, Rigoletto from Mantua stars Placido Domingo in the baritone title role of Rigoletto; Julia Novikova as his innocent daughter Gilda; Vittorio Grigolo as the womanizing Duke; and Ruggero Raimondi as the assassin Sparafucile. The film is recorded in in the Renaissance splendor of Mantua, Italy, in the actual places and hours of the day specified in the libretto. I am a general music teacher in a middle school in Massachusetts. I would like a copy of this recording if possible. I’ve always used the Rigoletto with Luciano Pavarotti but would be interested in changing to this one.

I too have been waiting to be able to purchase the DVD. I’m wondering why it’s taking so long to be able to do it? I hear over and over how much PBS needs money to keep bringing such great performances which it does and for which I am grateful but I don’t understand why you don’t make these productions available for purchase more readily available on DVD so people can BUY the programs. That’s untapped income. Is it necessary for us to beg? I would hope PBS is more evolved than that. Sorry for the frustration. I just want to be able to BUY the DVD. Thanks for listening.

Add me to the list of those wishing to purchase a DVD of this wonderful production. I happened on it last night when dial surfing. I’ve seen “Rigoletto” many times and this is the best I’ve ever seen. Unfortunately, I only got in for the beginning of “Cortigiani” but was then glued to the screen. Filming it in Mantua was a wonderful idea! There’s not much on PBS these days of real quality and you ought to make it available.

It has now been more than a year since PBS showed this opera on Great Performances. I’ve tried to watch it via the PBS free download on my computer, but technical limitations of my satellite provider prevent a truly satisfying experience. I regularly check DVD availability, but thus far cannot find any indication that a DVD might be in the making. Please let all of us know when, or if, a DVD of this beautiful production may become available for purchase.

The DVD issue of this performance has been in the planning stages for almost two years now. If it ever comes
out it will be in PAL region 2 formatting just like the other two Andrea Andermann productions: Tosca and La Traviata which were filmed in Rome and Paris respectively. Unfortunately both of these were produced in limited numbers and are difficult (if not impossible) to find.
