Rod Stewart: Merry Christmas, Baby
About the Show

Grammy Award®-winning, two-time Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Rod Stewart, hosts his first holiday special, Rod Stewart: Merry Christmas, Baby, on THIRTEEN’s Great Performances beginning this December on PBS (Check local listings).

In New York, THIRTEEN will air the program Monday, November 26 at 8 p.m.

Watch a preview:

“I’ve always wanted to do a Christmas special,” Rod Stewart remarked. “And this was truly worth the wait because what we were able to accomplish is just beyond my wildest dreams.”

Stewart’s concert special was taped in September at the lush Villa de Leon, a private residence overlooking the Pacific Ocean in Pacific Palisades, CA, near the famous Getty Villa, for which it is sometimes mistaken. It captures Stewart as he performs a collection of some of the most beloved holiday standards and traditional songs from his soon-to-be-released album also titled Merry Christmas, Baby.

Throughout the special, Stewart is joined by an incredible array of superstar artists, including Michael Bublé on “Winter Wonderland.” He is united with Mary J. Blige on “We Three Kings” and Cee-Lo Green on the title tune “Merry Christmas, Baby” featuring New Orleans’ favorite son, Trombone Shorty.  “What Are You Doing New Year’s Eve?” is a mesmerizing ‘virtual’ duet with Ella Fitzgerald featuring Chris Botti.  Among the other holiday favorites are “Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas,” “Santa Claus Is Coming To Town,” Irving Berlin’s “White Christmas,”  “Blue Christmas,” “When You Wish Upon A Star,” “Silent Night,” and “Auld Lang Syne.”

Stewart’s PBS concert special and album also feature a new, original track, “Red-Suited Super Man,” that’s destined to be a holiday classic and was composed by Rod Stewart, David Foster and Amy Foster.

For 50 years, THIRTEEN has been making the most of the rich resources and passionate people of New York and the world, reaching millions of people with on-air and online programming that celebrates arts and culture, offers insightful commentary on the news of the day, explores the worlds of science and nature, and invites students of all ages to have fun while learning.

David Foster, chairman, Verve Music Group, serves as producer and arranger of the Merry Christmas, Baby CD, which will be released October 30thRod Stewart: Merry Christmas, Baby is directed by Jim Gable and executive produced by Arnold Steifel.

For Great Performances, Bill O’Donnell is series producer, and David Horn is executive producer.  Major funding for the Great Performances telecast is provided by the Irene Diamond Fund and the Starr Foundation; and public television viewers.

OMG! This was a lovely surprise. The venue Villa de Leon was a perfect location. I loved everything about this performance and Rod Stewart can sing any genre. I enjoyed seeing the late great Ella too. The audience seemed to thoroughly enjoy themselves. I am hosting a holiday party on December 23rd and this program will be a highlight of the evening. Happy Holidays to all.

I have bought all his albums, seen all his concerts in Ne Zealand and Perth, Haven’t heard who won the competition to see him live at Caesars Palace,, that would be my ultimate dream to see him perform there. Merry Christmas Rod and to your beautiful family. Annie

  • Lynn

I’m so disappointed! The special’s promo popped up on my Facebook feed today so I went to the two PBS stations in our Tampa Bay area and it appears that WUSF already aired it the last three nights and I missed it! Will WUSF or WEDU be reairing it or selling the DVD?

  • stephanie

I didn’t get a chance to see this broadcast the first time it aired. Saturday is my birthday is it at all possible to re-broadcast ROD STEWART MERRY CHRISTMAS BABY SPECIAL–THANKS

  • david ernst

    Hi Marco,

Unfortunately, no. Great Performances and PBS are funded in large part by the American people and therefore our programs only air in the United States and its territories and occasionally Canada after a wait period. However, there are times when our programs are licensed by international channels and then can be seen abroad.

Thanks so much for your question.

  • Karen

Caught this special over the weekend on Wisconsin PBS. Absolutely loved the last song – jazzy and fun! What was the name of that song? Is that the new one? I didn’t see that on the new cd though. Thank you.

  • BrendaJ

How cool is it to hear Rod Stewart sing about Jesus in a manger! I’m an old rock n roller from way back and to see a guy who used to be in the news for his partying, and he’s now singing his heart out to Jesus is WAY COOL!

The PBS special of Great Performances by Rod Stewart, with arrangements by David Foster, guest star Mary J Blige, also an African American Church choir singing backup, and a children’s choir with each child holding a lighted, Christ-candle while singing, was simply over the top in Christmas specials!
    Thank You PBS!

  • Linda

Must be a lovely show, with all star cast and crew. David Foster being the producer and arranger, I’m pretty sure it’s a hit. Not to mention the fact that Rod Stewart is real classic. I’m an avid fan and I don’t think I’ll ever tire hearing his lovely voice on air! Hope he makes more albums next year.

What would we do without PBS and programs like this evening–first Andy Williams and then Rod Stewart Xms show. It brings home that with a few exception, what a wasteland commercial TV is–with inane comedy, violence aplenty–and hardly any cultural gems or civilizing programming. And is also a stark reminder that those idiot reps in Washington who want to cancel monies for NEA, NEH, PBS, etc. are the enemies of cultured entertainment, or quality in any shape and form, for the sake of profit and greed.

Best christmas show ever ever by miles…………class act, best song choises, ambiance, girls, atmosphere, set, voices and and and….

  • Mekrissy

I strongly drgisaee with your comment. The field of psychology has made significant strides in the past few decades and there is scientific evidence to support this. Many interventions such as CBT can have considerable positive impacts on patients’ lives. Your universal condemnation of psychology is unwarranted.
