CARNEGIE HALL OPENING NIGHT 2006 premiered on October 11, 2006 on PBS (check local listings).
GREAT PERFORMANCES returns to Carnegie Hall's famed stage for its 2006 gala opening night concert. This year's celebration features The Cleveland Orchestra under the baton of director Franz Welser-Möst for an evening of Viennese favorites. The program includes Mozart's beloved "Piano Concerto No. 17 in G Major" (K. 453), performed by acclaimed pianist Leif Ove Andsnes, and selections from the composer's opera "Le Nozze di Figaro" with soprano Dorothea Röschmann; the "Light Cavalry Overture" by Franz von Suppé; and to cap off the evening, "Artist's Life," "Annen-Polka," and the Overture to "Die Fledermaus" by the Waltz King, Johann Strauss Jr.
The Cleveland Orchestra's last appearance on the series was in 2000, for another opening night at Carnegie Hall, helmed by its then music director Christoph von Dohnányi. Franz Welser-Möst, who succeeded him in 2002, is now among a select group of conductors to head the distinguished ensemble. Read an interview with maestro Welser-Möst and soloist Leif Ove Andsnes in Dialogue. Find out why the Cleveland Orchestra is considered one of the best ensembles in the country and about the conductors who have helped shape it over the past 80 years in the essay by Tim Smith. See all the music included in the opening night concert in the song list. As the yearlong Mozart celebrations near conclusion, browse our guide about the composer that spotlights performances of his works from past GP shows and sites in Vienna and Salzburg that are now inextricably linked with him in the Multimedia Presentation: Celebrating Mozart.
Special funding for the program was provided by S. Donald Sussman, the Anna-Maria and Stephen Kellen Arts Fund, the Irene Diamond Fund, and the LuEsther T. Mertz Charitable Trust.
Program note: Soprano Dorothea Röschmann replaced bass-baritone Thomas Quasthoff, who was scheduled to appear in the telecast but was forced to withdraw due to illness.
