COLOR ME BARBRA premieres during March Pledge in 2006 on PBS (check local listings).
Barbra Streisand's second solo television special, COLOR ME BARBRA (1966), was greeted with equal acclaim to her first, MY NAME IS BARBRA, and still dazzles with even more musical and visual innovation. Videotaped in color, the special opens with a dreamy interlude at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, then segues to a charming, animal-filled circus sequence before concluding with a bravura concert performance. Recapturing the electrifying early years of the Streisand sensation, the showcase spotlights the many talents that paved the way for a legendary five-decade career as singer, actress, director, composer, and producer.
Barbra Streisand began work on COLOR ME BARBRA after completing her incredibly successful run as Fanny Brice in "Funny Girl" on Broadway and before her debut in the West End production of the show on April 13, 1966. She recorded and taped the prime-time special within a span of two weeks.
Given the popularity and acclaim her first special received, COLOR ME BARBRA follows a similar format, with Streisand performing classic songs from the great canon of American popular standards. See the complete lineup from the program in the song list. Explore the biographies of some of the renowned composers and songwriters -- among them Rodgers and Hart, the Gershwins, Cole Porter, and Irving Berlin -- whose music was selected for the special in the Multimedia Presentation.
Special funding for COLOR ME BARBRA was provided by the LuEsther T. Mertz Charitable Trust and the Starr Foundation.
