From the historic Byzantine Church of the Holy Peace, Hagia Irene, on the grounds of the Topkapi Palace in Istanbul comes the latest in GREAT PERFORMANCES' series of annual international concerts with the world-renowned Berlin Philharmonic. Led by acclaimed conductor Mariss Jansons, the program's repertoire features the brilliant young flute virtuoso Emmanuel Pahud in a performance of Mozart's "Concerto for Flute and Orchestra in D Major," which appropriately includes themes from the composer's "Ottoman" opera, "The Abduction from the Seraglio." Also featuring background information about life within the famed palace grounds during the Ottoman dynasty, the program concludes with a showcase for the orchestra in one of the perennial favorites of 19th-century Romanticism, Hector Berlioz's "Symphonie Fantastique."
