Premier: November 29, 1956
Theater: Shubert Theatre
Director: Jerome Robbins
Choreographed by: Jerome Robbins and Bob Fosse
music and lyrics by: Jule Styne (music), Betty Comden
and Adolph Green (lyrics)

Upstart musical director Jerome Robbins liked collaboration as little as Bob Fosse did, but when he found himself at the helm of "Bells Are Ringing," a major Broadway show, he called on Fosse to co-choreograph the production. Like many musicals of its time "Bells" was a lighthearted comedy, full of romance and awkward situations. The musical tells the story of Ella, a lonely answering service operator so desperate for contact that she gets involved in her callers' problems -- and eventually falls in love with one of her clients.
