To be sure, Fosse's exacting artistic direction and influential body of work negates any possibility of his being a bumbler, not to
mention his unassailable status as a ladies' man. But the
multi-talented choreographer/dancer/director was well known for his
lack of confidence. He was also notorious for disliking collaboration,
and he scored "Big Deal" entirely with songs from the past rather than
bringing in a composer. Having directed three films, Fosse tried to blur
the lines between movies and staged musicals in "Big Deal," but
ultimately came up short. He reacted to the show's scathing criticism
and poor attendance by pouring his heart out in media interviews,
telling the Boston Globe, "If 'Big Deal' doesn't turn out successful,
I really don't think I'll be as hurt as I used to be ... Maybe."
