Fosse entered the project after the original choreographer Hugh
Lambert proved incapable of bringing the show's handful of dance
numbers to life. Still stinging from his dismissal from the musical "The
Conquering Hero," Fosse empathized with Lambert and took the job on
the condition that the struggling choreographer stay on board. Under
the title of musical staging director, Fosse reshaped such songs as
"Coffee Break" and "A Secretary is Not a Toy" into comic numbers with
stunning dance performances. Ever the mischievous creator, Fosse once
locked veteran lyricist Frank Loesser out of a rehearsal so he could
work on changes without interference. The play won a trophy case full
of awards, including the Pulitzer Prize and the Tony Award for Best
Musical.
