Premier: March 27, 1978
Theater: Broadhurst Theatre
Director: Bob Fosse
Choreographed by: Bob Fosse
music and lyrics by: Various artists

Not one to be upstaged, Fosse reacted to phenomenal success of Michael Bennett's dance-intensive "A Chorus Line" by proposing a show with virtually no dialogue and little singing. Fosse publicly boasted that the project would liberate him from the burden of creative partnership: "When you have collaborators, you have all those midnight meetings. I'm tired of those...So I just decided to meet myself at midnight." In private, Fosse was daunted by the task of creating an entire two-hour dance program.
