Not one to be upstaged, Fosse reacted to phenomenal success of Michael
Bennett's dance-intensive "A Chorus Line" by proposing a show with
virtually no dialogue and little singing. Fosse publicly boasted that
the project would liberate him from the burden of creative
partnership: "When you have collaborators, you have all those midnight
meetings. I'm tired of those...So I just decided to meet myself at
midnight." In private, Fosse was daunted by the task of creating an
entire two-hour dance program.
