As if making up for the frivolity of "Damn Yankees," its creators based their next production, "New Girl in Town," on "Anna Christie," Eugene O'Neill's gloomy play about an errant prostitute who attempts to live down her past after returning home. "New Girl in Town" followed the underdog narrative so prevalent in Fosse's work, but it posed such challenges
in adapting to musical theater that it would ultimately destroy his partnership with director George Abbott.
