Since the musical was to have so much drama and so little movement, Fosse began to embellish the performers' walks until eventually he had
developed a dance sequence. The resulting "The Red Light Ballet" was a lurid portrayal of life in a brothel, offering enough shocking imagery to prompt New Haven police to shut down the production and padlock the stage door. Abbott cut the number until Fosse agreed to tone it down, but shortly after the show opened on Broadway, Fosse restored the sequence almost entirely. Unlike "Damn Yankees," "New Girl in Town" received lukewarm reviews, but became a big hit and went on a national tour a year later.
