That's DANCIN': Fosse on Broadway
Pippin
page: 1 2 3 4

While the story ends on a prosaic note, "Pippin" is best remembered for the semi-pornographical number, "Magic to Do." In the number, Fosse -- who was known as a serial philanderer -- presented an explicit ménage à trois sequence described by biographer Martin Gottfried as "putting his love life on stage, succumbing to an urge to confess, to reveal, to expose himself." The musical opened on Broadway to a lukewarm reception, but the show was advertised on television, the first time this had ever been done for a Broadway musical, and became a long-running hit as well as a box office success.
