A classic tale of mistaken identity adapted for the musical theater, "Redhead" tells the story of a London wax museum worker who thinks she has seen a vision of the mysterious strangler terrorizing the city. Fosse excelled in this first directing project, turning the romantic murder-mystery into a major critical and commercial success. The show was not without its challenges, however, like working in the shadow of
"West Side Story," which had recently swept Broadway and raised the bar for musicals. Under the pressure of his new dual role, Fosse often took out his stress on the cast members, including Verdon, who dropped as many as seven songs out of one performance from
fatigue.
