The show's evolution highlighted a side of Fosse that some of his colleagues called persistence and others derided as stubbornness. The
final song in the first act featured a musical chairs number starring a dancer in a gorilla costume. Director George Abbott feared the number would bewilder the audience, but Fosse was so adamant that it stay in that he performed the gorilla role himself in the New Haven preview. While Abbott won out, the mambo number that Fosse put in its place, "Who's Got Pain?," became another of his showstopping choreographic successes.
