Fontella Bass_intro

Fontella Bass's mother, Martha, was a gospel singer, first with the Clara Ward Singers and then with the Meditation Singers, in which young Fontella also sang. In her late teens, Fontella was discovered in her hometown, St. Louis, by blues singer Little Milton, and joined his band, leading to a contract with Checker Records in Chicago. Produced by St. Louis bandleader Oliver Sain, she made a string of great records, including "Rescue Me" and "The Soul of a Man," which show her gospel roots.

Fontella Bass with jukebox
Fontella Bass treats viewers to a brief reprise of her memorable 1965 hit, "Rescue Me."
Her touring band during her hit period in 1965-66 was led by trombonist Joseph Bowie, whose brother, Lester, was a member of the avant-garde Art Ensemble of Chicago. She married him, and became one of the few vocalists in the new jazz. She's still singing today, gloriously mixing the soul-gospel tradition with the ideas of the Art Ensemble's Great Black Music.
