Sony Classical: Artists: Rachel Portman

Stagework: Nicholas Wright

Children and adults alike have long been drawn to Antoine de Saint-Exupéry's small book THE LITTLE PRINCE, in which the curious title character relates his encounters with the solitary inhabitants of other planets -- including a king, a businessman, a vain man, and a drunkard -- to a pilot crash-landed in the Sahara Desert. Featuring a score by Academy Award®-winning composer Rachel Portman (EMMA, CHOCOLAT), which the HOUSTON CHRONICLE called "unrelentingly appealing," this new film adaptation was created especially for television and is directed by Francesca Zambello, based on the world-premiere production staged by the innovative Houston Grand Opera in 2003. Saint-Exupéry's enduring meditation on love and human nature is brought to life by Teddy Tahu Rhodes, reprising his Houston role as The Pilot, and the winners of an extensive talent search contest for the leading children's roles, 15-year-old Mairead Carlin as The Rose and 11-year-old Joseph McManners as The Little Prince.

The opera's young stars -- Joseph McManners, Mairead Carlin -- and a 35-member children's chorus were selected from among 25,000 youngsters who applied online and thousands who participated in open auditions. Get an overview of the opera in the essay by writer Marc Geelhoed, and discover how composer Rachel Portman became involved in the project and some of the hurdles its creators faced in adapting the story for the stage in the interview in Dialogue. Find all the music from the opera by Rachel Portman, with a libretto by Nicholas Wright, as well as a video excerpt from the program in the song list.
