New York theater producers, including representatives for all three major Broadway theater owners -- the Shuberts, the Nederlanders, and Jujamcyn -- attend a script reading at the Nola Studios in midtown Manhattan. Nathan Lane reads the part of Max Bialystock and Evan Pappas reads the Leo Bloom role. A resounding success, the reading has producers clamoring to be involved, with Jujamcyn -- owners of the St. James Theatre -- eventually heading the group of principal producers.
