ONE NIGHT WITH ROD STEWART premiered during March Pledge in 2005 on PBS (check local listings).
In the fall of 2004, Rock & Roll Hall of Famer Rod Stewart released STARDUST, the third volume in his series of incredibly successful, Grammy-nominated GREAT AMERICAN SONGBOOK albums. Stewart's first two volumes, IT HAD TO BE YOU and AS TIME GOES BY, have already sold more than 10 million copies and exposed the veteran superstar to a new and larger audience of all ages. As with those records, STARDUST features many of the most popular standards ever written, including Rodgers & Hart's "Isn't It Romantic" and "Manhattan," Cole Porter's "Night and Day," the Gershwins' "Embraceable You," "'S Wonderful," and "But Not for Me," and of course, Hoagy Carmichael's evergreen title track. Hosted by Dame Edna Everage and featuring special guests Ronnie Wood of the Rolling Stones and Chrissie Hynde of the Pretenders, GREAT PERFORMANCES presents Stewart in concert at London's Royal Albert Hall, spotlighting his unique approach to making many of the most enduring ballads of all time distinctly his own.
From mod rock to old-style crooning, Rod Stewart's Royal Albert Hall concert provides a taste of his long musical career, which began in London in the late 1960s as lead singer of such legendary bands as the Jeff Beck Group and the Faces and now thrives as he's tackled a completely new and unexpected genre -- American standards. Learn more about Stewart's life and career in writer Jaan Uhelszki's essay and her extensive interview with the singer in Dialogue. Watch excerpts from the concert in the Rod Stewart Video Jukebox, and find a directory of all the music from the program in the song list.
