GREAT PERFORMANCES returns to the legendary Austrian music capital to continue its internationally beloved New Year's Day concert broadcasts from Vienna's magnificent Musikverein. With veteran FROM VIENNA host Walter Cronkite presiding, the celebration features the world-renowned Seiji Ozawa as guest conductor, leading the Vienna Philharmonic in a buoyant selection of Strauss family waltzes and polkas. Complementing the telecast's ballroom repertoire will be performances by the Vienna State Opera Ballet, including the perennial favorite "On the Beautiful Blue Danube," with soloist Vladimir Malakhov. In a special addition to this year's telecast, the historic Viennese Spanish Riding School leads Austria's famed Lipizzaner horses in several equestrian ballets.

In Dialogue, read an interview with Seiji Ozawa, this year's guest conductor. A photo essay on the annual Viennese New Year's celebration is featured in the Multimedia Presentation. In addition, peruse a short biography of maestro Ozawa, who will be completing a 29-year tenure with the Boston Symphony Orchestra to become the music director of the Vienna State Opera.

Special funding for this program was provided by Bank Austria.
