UPDATE: Due to the presidential address, the broadcast time of the concert on 9/11 has been changed to 9:30 p.m.

In remembrance and renewal, THIRTEEN’S Great Performances will broadcast A Concert for New York , performed by the New York Philharmonic on the occasion of the tenth anniversary of 9/11 , led by Music Director Alan Gilbert, taped the previous night at a free concert in Avery Fisher Hall at New York’s Lincoln Center.

Mahler’s Symphony No. 2, Resurrection — featuring soprano Dorothea Röschmann mezzo-soprano Michelle DeYoung, and the New York Choral Artists — will air Sunday, September 11 at 9:30 p.m. ET on PBS (check local listings). The concert will also be broadcast internationally that same day.

(View full post to see video)

Great Performances is a presentation of THIRTEEN for WNET, one of America’s most prolific and respected public media providers. For nearly 50 years, WNET has been producing and broadcasting national and local arts programming to the New York community.

“Mahler‘s Second Symphony, Resurrection, powerfully and profoundly explores the range of emotions provoked by the memories of 9/11,” said Gilbert. “This great masterpiece has a very special place in the history and psyche of the New York Philharmonic, but its message of renewal and rebirth is universal. We offer it as a tribute to those lost ten years ago.”

Composed between 1888 and 1894, Gustav Mahler‘s Symphony No. 2, Resurrection, is an all- encompassing work, complete with a triumphant final movement for voices and orchestra in the tradition of Beethoven‘s Symphony No. 9.

The idea for the finale of the Resurrection Symphony came to Mahler in a flash of inspiration while he was attending the memorial service of Hans von Bülow, his benefactor and predecessor as conductor of the Hamburg Philharmonic. The composer was just then struggling to find a text suitable to his lofty intensions. As he described it: “The mood in which I sat there and thought of the departed one was exactly that of the work which, at the time, occupied me constantly; at that moment the chorus near the organ intoned the Klopstock chorale, ‘Aufersteh’n! [Arise!]‘ It struck me like a thunderbolt and everything stood clear and vivid before my soul.”

Mahler‘s setting of the 18th-century German poet Friedrich Gottlieb Klopstock‘s ode builds in majesty and intensity, as the Resurrection is depicted in a paean of triumph. The Philharmonic gave the work‘s U.S. premiere in December 1908, when the composer led the New York Symphony (which merged with the New York Philharmonic in 1928 to form today‘s New York Philharmonic), and has now performed the work a total of 28 times.

Music Director Alan Gilbert, the Yoko Nagae Ceschina Chair, began his tenure at the New York Philharmonic in September 2009. The first native New Yorker to hold the post, he ushered in what The New York Times called “an adventurous new era” at the Philharmonic. In the 2010-11 season Mr. Gilbert led the Orchestra on two tours of European music capitals; two performances at Carnegie Hall, including the venue‘s 120th Anniversary Concert, which was broadcast on Great Performances; and conducted the acclaimed staged presentation of Janaček‘s The Cunning Little Vixen.

Born in Flensburg, Germany, soprano Dorothea Röschmann made her critically acclaimed debut at the 1995 Salzburg Festival as Susanna in Mozart‘s The Marriage of Figaro. At The Metropolitan Opera she has sung the Mozartean roles of Susanna, Pamina (The Magic Flute), Donna Elvira (Don Giovanni), and Ilia (Idomeneo) with James Levine.

Mezzo-soprano Michelle DeYoung has performed with the New York, Los Angeles, and Vienna philharmonic orchestras; She has also appeared at many of the world‘s finest opera houses including The Metropolitan Opera, and has given numerous recitals worldwide.

New York Choral Artists, a professional chorus founded and directed by Joseph Flummerfelt, has been heard with the New York Philharmonic in recent seasons performing repertoire ranging from Michael Tippett‘s A Child of Our Time to Mozart‘s Requiem.

A Concert for New York is directed by Michael Beyer. For Great Performances, John Walker and Cara Cosentino are producers; Bill O’Donnell is series producer; David Horn is executive producer.

Credit Suisse is the Global Sponsor of the New York Philharmonic. Major funding for the Great Performances telecast is provided by the National Endowment for the Arts, The Anna-Maria and Stephen Kellen Arts Fund, the Irene Diamond Fund, Vivian Milstein, LuEsther T. Mertz, the Starr Foundation, the Philip and Janice Levin Foundation, Joseph A. Wilson, public television viewers, and PBS.

In June 2010, Eric Clapton gathered a veritable Who’s Who of the world’s most talented guitar players at the third Crossroads Guitar Festival, an 11-hour celebration of the six-string that attracted a sold-out crowd of more than 27,000 music fans to Chicago’s Toyota Park. All profits from this daylong display of guitar virtuosity benefited The Crossroads Centre in Antigua, a treatment and education facility Clapton founded to help people suffering from chemical dependency.

Two hours of highlights from the marathon event, Eric Clapton Crossroads Guitar Festival 3 will air as part of Great Performances on Monday, June 6 at 9 p.m. on PBS (check local listings).

(View full post to see video)

Clapton notes, “The Crossroads Festival is the realization of a dream for me, to gather a group of amazingly talented musicians to perform on one stage,” and adding, “The Crossroads performers are all musicians I admire and respect.” Actor-comedian Bill Murray — host of the second Crossroads Festival in 2007 — returns as MC, and supplies the festival’s nonmusical highlights with his inimitable style.

Great Performances is a production of THIRTEEN for WNET, one of America’s most prolific and respected public media partners.

It’s no surprise a festival named for a Robert Johnson song would include a heavy dose of the blues, and the 2010 edition does not disappoint, with remarkable performances by Sonny Landreth, Gary Clark, Jr., Keb’ Mo’ and Buddy Guy.

The rock contingent is also well represented by ZZ Top, Jeff Beck, the John Mayer Trio, Doyle Bramhall II, the Derek Trucks & Susan Tedeschi Band, Warren Haynes and Steve Winwood, who teamed with Clapton for several performances including an epic cover of Jimi Hendrix’s “Voodoo Chile.”

Various styles find a home here too, with Vince Gill’s amazing take on Clapton’s “Lay Down Sally” accompanied by the legendary James Burton and others; and Jeff Beck who performs “Hammerhead” which won the 2011 Grammy Award for Best Rock Instrumental Performance.

Other artists making appearances include: Sheryl Crow, Ronnie Wood, Robert Randolph, Jonny Lang, Joe Bonamassa, Pino Daniele, and Los Lobos’ David Hidalgo and Cesar Rosas.

Song Listing:

“Promise Land” – Sonny Landreth w/Eric Clapton
“Going Down” – Pino Daniele, Joe Bonamassa, Robert Randolph & The Family Band
“Waiting for The Bus” – ZZ Top
“Jesus Just Left Chicago” – ZZ Top
“Five Long Years” – Buddy Guy with Jonny Lang & Ronnie Wood
“Hammerhead” – Jeff Beck
“Had to Cry Today” – Steve Winwood & Eric Clapton
“Voodoo Chile” – Eric Clapton & Steve Winwood
“Dear Mr. Fantasy” – Steve Winwood & Eric Clapton

The first Crossroads Guitar Festival, in June 2004 at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas, an unprecedented collection of guitar icons from blues, rock, and contemporary music, aired on Great Performances in December of that year. The two-disc DVD that has since achieved the 10x platinum mark in the United States alone. The Crossroads Guitar Festival 2007, the second such concert by Clapton and also staged at Toyota Park, aired on Great Performances in November 2007, and its DVD was certified 6x platinum. The complete 2010 concert was released by Rhino Entertainment on Blu-ray and DVD.

A Parallel 28 Equipe Inc. Production, Eric Clapton Crossroads Guitar Festival 3 was directed for television by Martin Atkins. Eric Clapton, Peter Jackson, James Pluta and Scooter Weintraub are producers; John Beug and Michael Eaton are executive producers.

Jackie Evancho: Dream with Me in Concert, marks the solo concert debut of the 10-year-old girl with the extraordinary soprano voice. The Great Performances special will be telecast in June on PBS stations.

Great Performances is a production of THIRTEEN for WNET, one of America’s most prolific and respected public media partners.

Already familiar to national audiences from her debut appearances on America’s Got Talent, Jackie is the youngest star in Great Performances’ recent Hitman Returns: David Foster & Friends concert for March pledge, performing virtuoso interpretations of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Pie Jesu” and Puccini’s “O Mio Babbino Caro.” Foster will co-host the special, and serve as music director.

Jackie Evancho’s concert will celebrate the release of her first full-length SYCO/Columbia CD Dream with Me, which covers classical crossover material, and will be taped at the spectacular grounds of the magnificent The John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art in Sarasota, Florida.

Watch a preview:

(View full post to see video)

Jackie’s musical selection on the program is scheduled to include “When You Wish Upon A Star,” “Nella Fantasia,” “A Mother’s Prayer,” “Nessun Dorma,” “Angel,” “O Mio Babbino Caro,” “Somewhere,” “All I Ask Of You,” “Ombra Mai Fu,” “Lovers,” “Imaginer,” “The Lord’s Prayer,” “To Believe,” and “Dream With Me.”

Although her appearance on America’s Got Talent introduced the world to Jackie Evancho and her astonishing vocal talent, her musical story begins before her life-changing appearance on the talent contest. At her first talent competition, she came in second place to a 20-year old opera singer. As Jackie’s talents blossomed, she sought out more opportunities to perform for audiences.

Eventually, she caught the attention of Grammy-winning producer David Foster when she won a regional competition that allowed her to sing as Foster accompanied her on piano.

Jackie’s first on-air America’s Got Talent performance of “O Mio Babbino Caro” was transcendent, delighting and amazing the surprised audience.

The judges were instantly smitten. “I can’t believe that from this tiny body, this huge mature voice you have,” said Sharon Osbourne. Piers Morgan exclaimed, “This is one of the most extraordinary performances that I’ve ever seen on America’s Got Talent.” Howie Mandel simply stated, “You’re an angel. You’re a superstar.”

She further wowed everyone with her subsequent performances of “Time to Say Goodbye,” made famous by her idols, Andrea Bocelli and Sarah Brightman; “Pie Jesu,” also introduced by Brightman when Great Performances premiered Lloyd Webber’s Requiem in 1985, and, in the finale, the classic “Ave Maria.” Evancho’s sterling appearances sent sales of her self-made independent release, “Prelude to a Dream,” soaring up Billboard’s Top Classical Crossover Albums Chart, where it peaked at No. 2.

Now, in support of the release of Dream with Me, Great Performances presents Jackie Evancho in a solo concert that will fully reveal the complete range and depth of this spectacular young talent. SYCO/Columbia Records will release the album, produced by 16-time Grammy Award winner David Foster, on Tuesday, June 14.

Jackie Evancho: Dream with Me in Concert is a co-production of THIRTEEN for WNET and SYCO/Columbia. For Great Performances, Mitch Owgang is producer; Bill O’Donnell is series producer; and David Horn is executive producer.

Major funding for the Great Performances telecast is provided by the Starr Foundation, the Philip and Janice Levin Foundation, Joseph A. Wilson, and public television viewers.

On May 5, 2011, Carnegie Hall will commemorate its 120th anniversary with an all-star gala concert featuring conductor Alan Gilbert and the New York Philharmonic and special guests pianist Emanuel Ax, cellist Yo-Yo Ma, violinist Gil Shaham, and the four-time Tony Award-winning singer and actress Audra McDonald.

Carnegie Hall 120th Anniversary Concert — featuring the works of Ludwig von Beethoven, Duke Ellington, Antonin Dvořák, and George Gershwin — will air as part of Great Performances on Tuesday, May 31, 2011 from 8-9:30 p.m. ET on PBS (check local listings).

(View full post to see video)

Great Performances is a production of THIRTEEN for WNET, one of America’s most prolific and respected public media partners.

The eclectic, crowd-pleasing program is set to include Beethoven’s Triple Concerto in C major, Op. 56, performed by Ax, Ma, and Shaham, a selection of Duke Ellington songs – including “Solitude,” “Sophisticated Lady,” “On a Turquoise Cloud,” and “It Don’t Mean a Thing if it Ain’t Got That Swing” — performed by McDonald, and full performances of Antonin Dvořák’s Carnival Overture and George Gershwin’s An American in Paris.

Dvořák conducted his Carnival Overture with the Boston Symphony at Carnegie Hall when he came to New York to assume his post as director of the National Conservatory of Music on October 21, 1892.

Gershwin’s An American in Paris was commissioned by the New York Philharmonic, and conducted by Walter Damrosch in the New York premiere on December 13, 1928 at Carnegie Hall. (The concert hall was the home base of the New York Philharmonic until the orchestra moved to its current location at Lincoln Center’s Avery Fisher Hall in 1962.)

Ellington played his first historic Carnegie Hall concert on January 23, 1943, beginning an extraordinary series of concerts there of his long-form works.

In the late 1800’s, New York City was emerging as an international capital, and composers were flourishing in the classical world. In 1891, Carnegie Hall, founded by industrialist and entrepreneur Andrew Carnegie, opened its doors as simply “Music Hall” on May 5, 1891 with none other than Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky conducting. It was renamed “Carnegie Hall” in 1893 when Carnegie allowed the use of his name and was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1962.

Carnegie Hall 120th Anniversary Concert is a co-production of Carnegie Hall and THIRTEEN for WNET. For Great Performances, John Walker, Cara Cosentino, and Mitch Owgang are producers; Bill O’Donnell is series producer; and David Horn is executive producer. It will be directed for television by Brian Large.

Major funding for the Great Performances telecast is provided by The National Endowment for the Arts, The Anna Maria and Stephen Kellen Arts Fund, the Arlene and Milton D. Berkman Philanthropic Fund, The Lillian Goldman Programming Endowment, Victor and Sono Elmaleh, Vivian Milstein, the Starr Foundation, the Philip and Janice Levin Foundation, and Joseph A. Wilson, with additional funding in memory of Virginia and Leonard Marx.

The television broadcast of this concert is supported by S. Donald Sussman, with additional support to Carnegie Hall from the National Endowment for the Arts.
