Angered by plans to build a pagan shrine on the site of the destroyed temple, and encouraged by the rabbis, the Judeans revolted. The rebellion ultimately failed and was devastating for Judea and the Jews.

Jews living within this sophisticated and scholarly culture were able to take advantage of the resources it offered. Here, Jews developed the trade routs between Muslim and Christian lands.
