Polish Jews, 16th-17th cent. Illustration from Nathan Hannover's Abyss of Despair (Transaction Publishers)

Polish Jews had a complex network of hevrot (membership societies and associations) to organize every aspect of communal life. Some groups oversaw public education, the reformation of wayward youth, fundraising for the poor in Israel, or the redemption of kidnapped traders abroad. Other hevrot included retail business organizations, burial societies, and other charitable associations.
