the Portuguese inquisition was operating in Brazil, a group
of Jews tried to sail to Amsterdam. When they arrived in
New Amsterdam instead, they started the first Jewish community
in the new world.
New
immigrants from Germany found that become a peddler or a
merchant was the way to success.
Many
Jewish immigrants made their first home on the Lower East
Side of Manhattan. Here they tried to make a new life amidst
the crowds, the disease and the poverty.
