Teaching Guides

The Teacher Materials featured on this interactive Web site were developed by the social studies staff of the Talent Development Middle Schools Program at the Center for Social Organization of Schools (CSOS), the Johns Hopkins University. The Talent Development Middle Schools Program (TDMS) is a national whole-school reform model developed in 1966 by researchers, educators and experienced curriculum writers in collaboration with middle school practitioners. It contains nine fundamental components that transform a school into a high-performance learning community by establishing the standards-driven curriculum, instruction, school organization, and professional development needed in order for all students to learn challenging academic materials and to prepare for successful futures.

The TDMS Social Studies/U.S. History curriculum incorporates a variety of research-based strategies to improve classroom instruction and student understanding. Designed with both teachers and students in mind, the curriculum offers innovative teacher and student materials compiled into resource manuals designed to accompany each of the 10 volumes in the A History of US series by Joy Hakim. These A History of US Teaching Guide and Resource Books© feature at least twenty-five lessons per book, along with review lessons, review games, assessments, and student materials that meet or exceed the national standards for the teaching of history and social studies. The Teacher Materials created for this web site and the Freedom: A History of US video series include content from these comprehensive Resource Guides.
