George Washington with a Slave

Even the great George Washington owned slaves—his homestead of Mount Vernon employed hundreds of them. During the war he employed a personal slave as his attendant, as shown here in this engraving by Noe Le Mire. And he supported the Constitution's acceptance of slavery in America. But in his last will and testament Washington freed his own slaves, setting an example for future generations to follow.
