Edwin Stanton Edwin Stanton

Edwin McMasters Stanton was the secretary of war under Abraham Lincoln and Andrew Johnson. Stanton worked closely with the radicals in Congress and used his influence with Lincoln to advance their program. When Johnson tried to remove Stanton from office, Stanton barricaded himself in his office, and the radicals in Congress, claiming that Johnsonís actions violated the Tenure of Office Act, initiated impeachment proceedings against him.
