The Vicksburg Campaign
Ulysses S. Grant's victory at Vicksburg, Mississippi on July 4, 1863, coming just after the Union win at Gettysburg, turned the tide of the Civil War. Pictured here are the Confederate cannons which for months made Vicksburg impregnable to assault. Their destruction in late June opened the way for Grant's successful attack on the city.
